Finally, it was time for the Navy Six SEALs to come in action! Previous opponents (Lednovate Esch Stars and TiMax/DeVoKo) were intimidated by our military might and postponed those battles. So, this match would be our first military operation. Unfortunately, Casper, our only diagonal was wounded in a previous battle and limited to the bench.

To strengthen the troops and raise military morale, dinner was served at Wesley’s place. This meeting served as a tactical briefing, as well. Last week the reconnaissance squad (Gents 7) had conducted an investigation, which gave valuable information. Keeping pressure on the opponent would be battle plan for tonight’s clash. Concluding dinner, it was recommended that line cooks Wesley and Thomas be immediately promoted to the rank of Captain, based upon demonstrated curry-making skills and logistical insight.

After retrieving the latest military gear, the match started. The enemy was battle-hardened and experienced (read: old), so a large fight was to be expected. With hard hits on either side of the field, the set advanced to its conclusion at equal points. After a final push by the mighty Seals, the opponent was brought to their knees and had to yield the set at 27-25.

For the second set our strategist Iris had only one advice: keep pressing the initiative! Since we had the mental high ground, we got more into the groove and our opponents started slipping up. Slowly our lead build up and the opponent had to use all their timeouts, leading to a swift victory at 25-18.

I wish I could report that the rest of the match continued like this, but no. Cupido regrouped and regained their calm demeanor. We, however, started making more errors. Let’s just say that some target practice, wouldn’t be a waste of time. Even after some time-outs we did not regain our composure and lost 14-25.

At this point, our best volleyball had already been played. Our fatigue had built up and morale had taken a beating. However, we gathered our spirits, and made a last effort to keep 4 points in Enschede. Unfortunately, this set was also lost at a score of 18-25.

In the fifth set, we lost a few points early and did not manage to recover. This set was lost at 7-15, signaling a tactical retreat. Overall, lots of battle experience was gained this day, but no decisive victory was achieved. We'll get them next time!
