A worthy opponent

After having a nice meal at Frank’s place, we continued our mission to dominate our class and make our great leader proud. This week we encountered Devoc HS 1, who has once beaten the team currently ranked first in our group. It was going to be a tough game.

In typical older aged team fashion, Devoc arrived only 15 minutes before game time. This already created some frustration towards them which we used to fuel our play.

Luckily Devoc not having warmed up for long worked in our favor. We won the first set with an overwhelming score of 25-12! Often benefitting from their slow middle blockers by scoring on the single man blocks.

After the crushing defeat of set one Devoc managed to find their groove. They came back from a score of 19-15 in our favor and took the second set from us. Unlucky for them, we we got more used to how they attack during this set. We lost the second set 23-25.

Our defense this set was even better and the rallies were getting longer. But we persevered and won most of them. Next we destroyed our opponent’s spirit by scoring about 5 or 6 points in a row around the 15-point mark. Most of those were acquired through our great attack and defense, we were simply out-playing them. We won the third set 25-20!

The opponent got an early 5-0 lead on us. This would become a very difficult set, we tried hard get back up and make a comeback. We didn’t quite manage to do that and lost the fourth set 25-27.

At this point it was 2 to 2, we had just lost a second set. But we did not lose our spirit! Even as the pressure rose, we didn’t let Devoc get another early lead. We even squeezed out an early lead of 8-5 ourselves! Battling through long and exhausting rallies we worked harder than ever to get the score to 14-11. Now we only needed one more point! This is when a fearless setter of ours decided that it was the opportune moment to pull off a first tempo set behind him! The ball was played nicely to the setter, the set went up… and we flopped it. Luckily right after Devoc flopped right back by serving out and we won 15-12.
We beat one of our toughest opponents yet!
