First cup match victory!

On the 12th of September Gents 1 had their first Cup match against Vips Bardot H3, where they went up against their once good friends Pim and Yuri. During the warmup some nice words were exchanged between us and our old companions, however from the first points onwards no mercy was shown. 

We started off strong by leading 4:0 in the first set. We held that lead and even increased it by the end of the set, confidently winning the first set 25:16. Wybren’s insane vertical jump combined with Stefan’s marvellous setting left our opponents completely without an answer. In addition to the good attacking we also shined in defence where Vince was keeping the floor free of the balls.

In the second set we made some changes in the starting lineup, however the story of the game continued in a similar manner. Vips did not find an answer to get more than 18 points in the set and that was without Wybren in the game. Alex made a great H1 debut and really showed why he deserves the spot in the highest Gents team.

The third set was the closest one where we were trailing the whole set by 3 points. That was mostly due to our own mistakes in blocking, defence and general communication. It definitely showed that it was the first game of the season. However our brave warriors made a comeback and tied 22:22. The tension was felt in the air. We had solid attacks and services from Max, who does not budge under pressure. 24:23 on the scoreboard, match point on the line, Martin got the last set and hammered it down, giving us a solid 3:0 start to the season.

A very solid start and let this be an example for the rest of the games to come.
