Undefeated Gents 1
Saturday, 28th of September, the gents one direction had its first home game and final cup match in the pool stages. The stands were filled with spectators and their cheering songs were heard from far far away. We also had the Beaver mascot cheering for us, who probably sweat more in that costume, while entertaining the crowd, than the players on the court. The opponent for this time was Apollo Heren 2 and Heren 2 they are for a reason, as they were a far second in the match and did not even come close to us. In the end we went 9:0 and are still to be defeated.
The first set started off well, with us having a constant comfortable lead. The middle attacks were working well and they did not have the hitting power to face us. However, their will was strong and they kept defending crazy balls. We were still warming up and had a few hiccups here and there. This did not faze us and we finished the set off strong with a solid 25:15 victory.
The second set started in a dominant way with us leading 6:0 after a solid service series from Oskar. After the first set, the opponent’s will was broken and they had no answers left from us. We broke them completely with a few combination attacks and with Martin hammering the ball down to the floor, which might have caused a few dents here and there. Our iron wall in blocking stood strong and the opponents were really struggling to get the ball over. A very dominant 25:11 victory.
The third set was just dotting the i’s and hammering a few final nails in the coffin, which we gladly did. Alex and Martin were really shining with their serves, which was a tough nut to crack for the opponents. Alex was also shining on defense, where no ball on the position 6 hit the ground. Everybody gave a solid effort, fought for the balls and we finished the final set 25:16.
Everybody got some playing time and it was a good game to boost our confidence going into the beginning of the season. Be back next week where we will be facing LIVO HS1 for our first third division match, in our very own University of Twente Sportcentrum. Be there or be square!
