Who can take a set from Gents 1??
On the 12th of October the Harambee fighters faced a new challenger, Hellas H1, who for some reason are trying to be the Greek basketball team.
Even though they were playing promotie class last year, we were not underestimating our opponent, as there must’ve been a good reason for their promotion. So the fight started with our lovely supporters in the stands of SC4.
The match started well, however we made a lot of our own mistakes. We were missing serves (probably due to the fact that we are training in SC2, which has no space for serving) and also our attacking was a bit short from what it usually is. Regardless, we were able to get our combos going and Wybren, Max and Martin were doing a good job putting the ball on their side of the court. We won the first set with a solid score of 25:21.
The second set began well with the vibes being great on the field. We got ahead right away and never looked back. Wybren hammered down our first B attack from a good receiving and everything was looking good: our defense, receiving, attacking and setting. We stomped them with a score of 25:9, truly breaking their willingness to play.
The third set was the toughest we had this far. We were tied until half-way of the set, after which we were unable to hit the ball to their side of the court. Something was off and we took too many tries to fix it. We were 15:18 behind and really needed to get ourselves together to win this set. That’s when our team captain, Marijn, stood up to the task and took his spot behind the service line. He served aces and put the opponent under immense pressure, which they were unable to bounce back from, finishing the set with a beautiful 9:0 run and a final score of 25:18.
The fourth set gave a chance for everybody to play (what a great coaching and trust in her men from Monica) and prove that they can rise up to the occasion. The set was tough, full of fighting and throwing punches until the very last moments. We were behind with 23:24, however our nerves of steel did not give in. A good reception and a solid hit to tie the score. The opponent did the same, putting them once again ahead and at match point. We received well and tied the score, putting Arne to the service line. He served us an ace at a crazy moment putting us 26:25 ahead. The second ball we defended and Alex with a crazy wrist action delivered a finishing punch to the face of one of the players (hit the ball straight into his face/head) and with that the fighters of Gents 1 brought home another 4:0 win.
A solid win, however valuable information was gained on what to improve on, and we’ve been and will continue to work hard to maintain our position at the very top of the leaderboard. Stay tuned for more of Gents 1!
