How to (not) impress your parents 101

Sometimes the people that know you best are your worst critics. No matter how good you played during your last match, parents always find a way to discredit your performance, along with that of your team. In our last match, there were undoubtedly some factors that made this critique extra harsh. Therefore we present to you a list of how to impress your parents in volleyball…

  1. Make sure your parents haven’t played volleyball.

It is absolutely essential that your parents have no idea what good or bad is. That way, as long as you say that you did well they will think you actually did. Clearly we made some mistakes on that point. As some of our people, if not most come from families that have played volleyball for what seems like centuries, they know what good volleyball looks like, and when we don’t show that. In that case you get nasty cases like your dad counting how many good balls you hit during the match (and not counting the decent ones at that) , which is not great ladies and gentlemen. So to all of you readers, make sure you pick your parents appropriately and look into their history in sports before joining their families.

  1. Maybe not share the link to that livestream.

If you receive a livestream link to the match you will be playing, think very carefully if you will be sharing that link with your parents, especially if you haven’t followed the advice in point 1. Although it is nice to be receiving compliments about your playing, there is always that chance that those compliments will become criticism if your match doesn’t play out the way you want. If you do decide to let your parents watch, let them watch in real life. Nothing is as irritating as bad reception when watching a match online, and as most places have bad wifi in general this will lead your parents to having less tolerance for your lesser playing. As a secondary reason to get your parents to be there in real life; parents are nicer when your teammates are also there.

  1. Win your match.

As silly as it sounds, winning heals all wounds. With the taste of victory your parents will be more likely to be impressed by the playing in general, and thus also with your playing. As we did not win our match this increased our chance of not impressing our parents with about 51.5%.

As we didn’t follow these advices in life, or especially last saturday, it meant that some of us got to endure worse feedback from their parents than that which they got from our coaches and (even) Kimberly. If you, just like us have some nastily unimpressed parents please always remember:

Even when you lose your match

And your parents are making you go through a rough patch

Good points will come to you.

Until then bittergarnituur will pull you through

Next time, that win will surely be an easy catch.

Lovely greetings from your one and only ladies 2.
